High Tide forecast + 50 up to + 100 cm : with incoming tide best time ca. 2 hours before high tide. Nautical mile (best wind direction: 250 – 260 degrees): when the 4 grass islands are just surrounded with water

High Tide forecast + 150 cm : with outgoing tide best time 2 hours before low tide. Liquid ice. On the sandbank use a flap fin board.

Tide forecast low tide + 300 cm : too much water, no way – even at low tide

ST.PETER BAD

high tide forecast 6:12 am: + 150 to 200 cm - low tide 12:46 o clock: + 300 cm

Water came very quickly (NW-storm). 3 hours before low tide the beach was dry – one hour after low tide the beach was flooded. First north of the new bridge, then the southern beach a little and the part directly south of the bridge as the last.

St.Peter-Ording, 05.10.08

southern beach, covered with water

9m Answer

RoDwY board

2.5 cm steel fin

max: 55.8 kn

2 sec: 55.5 kn

100m: 55.0 kn

new PB topspeed and 5×10 sec, more than 50 projected over 500m finally

wind 35 – 48 kn

good spot for s – ssw

Westerhever 12.03.08

7:30 – 8:30 am

Windreport: http://picasaweb.google.dk/Tilmann.Heinig/Windreports/photo#5176847920853310818

yellow stripe flap fin board with latest version of flap fin + 12m Answer

new flap fin record: 88,2 km/h Topspeed in 35 kn gust

250m: 45.5 kn……500m: 43.8 kn

Best liquid ice since January 07 (WSW, outgoing tide, north of the poles)

Flap fin works perfectly. It must have flapped, because I felt a little braking on the sandbanks. No sucking air = spin outs, not slower than normal fin. Should make the power of spring a little less.

St.Peter-Ording 01.03.08

Hurricane warning

With new 7m Mayhem no problem in 50 knots gusts. Nice colours. Water not smooth enough for new records but a lot of fun in the swell directly in front of the beach. Almost 70 km/h.

After I hade made a break, North Sea surprised me again and came too quick.

Westerhever 27.02.08

Windreport: http://picasaweb.google.dk/Tilmann.Heinig/Windreports/photo#5172323169508209762

less wind than on 22.02. but with 7m Trix 76 km/h. Tears a lot in gusts due too very full strut profile. But rocksolid in the wind window (low AR). Really excellent.

WESTERHEVER 22.02.08

Wind 5-6 Bf. Gusts 7 Bf. on the water: 11-13 Uhr

Board: Homemade Halfmoon Kite: 12m Caution Answer

Topspeed: 80 km/h 500m: 41.2 knots

Remarks : When arrived, I measured gusts of 53 kn on top of the dike. Down near the the water, when i was ready to start the gusts were only 40 kn.
I have reached a good level again (thanks to the wind !), but getting 100 km/h will be very hard.
Not the run itself, but going upwind and landing the kite afterwards.
Today it was the second time I couldnt manage to land my kite alone. It flew away over the dike, over the trees and over a high voltage wire (!) until it landed on a field 300 m away. But only the middle strut has a hole and only some small rips in the sail. Had a lot of luck today.
Almost broke my ribs when I crashed in the chop at the end of the course
The Priel was not broad enough, but I found a sandbar with a suitable direction southeastwards. High water level despite of halfmoon. Game over only one hour after low tide.
Remarks : There is a big discussion since last year wether its possible to come to lee quicker than the wind itself. Or if you start and let go a ballon at the same time – can you catch it again ? I finally showed that its possible. With the race material of Armin Harich who was 4th in St.Peter-Ording in course racing. He uses a Spleene Door with a half moon outline and a 19m Flysurfer Speed Silverarrow. Another guy on the beach measured the wind which was 12.7 kn average . Me myself however reached a speed of 26.4 kn (over 250m) on an angle of 140 degrees. So I came to lee (leeward speed) with ca. 20 kn which is much faster than the wind speed of 12.7 kn.
Remarks : In the very beginning of the session the ocean swallowed my world record board.
I am still totally shocked.
It happened exactly at the northern corner of Ording beach, where there are lot of swirls and under water currents. Wind was 6 Bf. sideonshore. With only 16 kn the front part of the board cut into the water and I lost the board. Only 15 m away from that I stopped and looked for the board. Normally I would have seen it immediately, because the water was only 60-70 cm deep.
But it remained disappeared for ever.
Maybe you find it one day :-) – tel.nr. is written on the tail…
Pic:
http://surfforum.oase.com/showthread.php?t=45674
So I had to switch to my bidirectional and did
48.28 kn max
Lefthand from the new bridge in St.Peter-Bad on the flooded beach. Thats the fastest recorded topspeed for a bidirectional ever, I think.
Once it was too shallow (1cm!), I wanted to stop the run, because the rear fin only made SSSSS… in the sand. So I erected a little and BANG! the front fin bit into the sand. With the fin as a pivot point the board span around immediately.
The result: torsion of front foot and no surfing for one week :-(
So it seems to be necessary to remove the front fin in very shallow water.

Due to the fact that with my bidi I could go fast in BOTH directions, I set a new one hour record:
http://50knots.xs4all.nl/gps-kitesurfing/gps.asp?mnu=rankings&smnu=hour&val=&uid

Used a Navi with Doppler speed.

UPDATE:
Next day a family from Cologne in holiday found my board swimming in the harbour of Tuemlauer Bay and called me by phone.
SO MY BABY IS BACK !
I didnt take it serious today, because normally my board for wind from the right is not so fast and Suedwesthoern also. In total I was right but the big surprise came at home, when I looked at the nautical mile.
I did one at the end just for fun and might have set a new worldrecord if I didnt have come into the chop at the end. WOW! Next time I have to start only 50 m upwards of the course in the very beginning ! Then it fits exactly.
Remarks : new GPS recorded kite worldrecord nautical mile !
nice wind – very regularly, water perfectly flat and perfect wind direction (WSW-almost West): a little bit too tight in the southern part but perfectly broad in the northern part. Only in the very moment, when water has come around the 3 little grass islands in the beginning of the course , its perfect for the nautical mile (during flood). Rest of the time there is either a big sandbank in the middle of the course or too much water in the beginning and the end of the run. So you have only 15 – 20 minutes to get your record ! not enough wind for new records, but a nice nautical mile.
Once going upwind I saw a shy seagull flying beside me
50m distant exactly at the same speed – maybe she loved me ? I should put on a bird mask next time…

Remarks : new 500m world record for kiters – if I hadnt have the spin out in the beginning of the run, when a big gust hit me…maybe it had been the new outright world record. So its still 1.1 knot until the big goal:)
Meanwhile Im getting used to 50 knot speed – Im not so afraid anymore. Its fun more and more.
I thank god for this awesome spot !
1 hour : 16.5 knots
Distance : 48.5 km
Windspeed : 32 knots
Windgusts : 42 knots
Remarks :
You had to be careful and patient today. Following I measured on top of the dike:
9:00 a.m.: max gust 50 kn, High tide = too much water
10:00 a.m.: Rainsquall max gust 62 (!) kn – no way ! Suicide conditions !!!!
11:00 a.m: blue sky 58 kn – too much, but the forecast had predicted less wind – so I put on my wetsuit
12:00 a.m.: Measured only 38 kn directly at the water – GO !
Perfect water conditions with this wind direction (West)=liquid ice. In my fastest runs I had my kite extremely high – very interesting ! Westerhever showed again its potential. It doesnt felt like speedSURFing anymore – it felt like speedSKATing – its really like on ice. On my fastest runs I had almost no pressure on the bar, 10 or 15 knots more wind would have been no problem. So now I dont see any limit at all! Its quite a different world and the only limit is in your head…:)
At home I was a little bit disappointed about the 500m. Maybe its because at the start there was a row of wooden sticks I had to pass. Perhaps I was a little bit too anxious there. So there is still room for improvement…:)
Remarks : 13 degrees in January – thats crazy ! Besides that it was a normal day in Westerhever.:)
SW seems to be too broad for nautical mile.
So I concentrated on 10 sec runs. In the late afternoon, when it was almost dark, the wind became stronger and I found some liquid ice places.
Did a shallow water crash again – and nothing happened to me again. Seems as if its not dangerous at all: The board stops at once…you slip out of the straps and shoot in front like a cannon ball, but the kite holds you…so you only slide over the water on your back, spinning around several times until you stop…thats all. It didnt hurt in any way !
Of course this cant be a final statement, so more experiences have to follow…
Remarks : That damn nautical mile ! This day was my fourth attempt already.
Nautical mile on a natural beach is a tricky adventure.
I had only one run – then the water was gone.
Too square in the beginning, too choppy in the middle
(only 30.5 knots) and too broad at the end, but finally I succeeded : 39.1 knots
On my second run I wanted to avoid the chop in the middle and went nearer to the shore and wanted to bear off with a gust into the flat part after that. But there was no gust. So suddenly the fin bite into the sand and I made the catapult meanwhile the board stuck in the sand. Nothing happened to me but the kite crashed into the ground and lost air afterwards and so the the session was already finished after 35 minutes.
And here the stunning results of my crash:
(2-sec speed) 45.35…27.33…1.36 !
But I got back my record at last…
What a smooth ride, what a great feeling !
When I arrived in Westerhever in the morning I immediately hurried into the public toilet where I had forgotten my contact lenses two days before. They were still there ! In that moment I knew, Westerhever loves me and this will be a good day.
I was much too early – no water at all. But the wind was good, steady 7 Beaufort with gusts of 40 knots or a bit more. The steady light rain was a good sign for steady wind. A little bit cold, 7 degrees, but still ok.
When the water came it was too narrow for longer runs but here I already reached 46 knots
which showed me that my new board was a good one.
It was almost two hours cruising and waiting for the water. The water came much later than two days before. But suddenly it was perfect: A glassy layer of ankle deep fluid covered the dead flat beach – liquid ice.
GO !
Suddenly I saw grass looking through the water surface. But the run was too good to interrupt it. So I burst through that part and tremendous gusts accelerated me more and more. A really great feeling ! At the end I looked at the display:
50.8 knots ! I screamed at least five minutes long for what other people would immediately have been put into mental home.
After I had calmed down I made some more runs to increase my average and then I thought: Better dont ride 100 km/h because nobody would believe itJ
So I stopped the session for the day.
I think the main reason for my huge increase in speed is my new halfmoon board. Its stiffer and 5 cm wider than the old one ( for you dont have control problems in dead flat water) and it has a halfmoon outline. That means the toe side is round like a waveboard and the heelside almost straight. Its because on full speed you hardly edge your board. So its more like a windsurfboard where you need a clean outline without corners and cut outs. The board lays stable in the water and is the most comfortable to ride ever. And its the first board which is really looking good in my eyes.
The times in detail and a picture of the board you can see here:
Remarks : my first session with my new selfmade fin of stainless steel (V4A) – and it worked well. For I always ride in extremely shallow water now (after reading that David had these conditions for his record), normal fins are spoiled after every session. The steel fin is 3.6 X 17 cm, the water was sometimes only two (!) fingers deep. I measured at home how wide my two little fingers are: 4 cm ! But only in that shallow water – I call it liquid ice – you dont have any waves (rolling chop) even on an extremely broad course. (135-140 degrees)
I think thats the key for 50 knots…
The second advantage of the shallow water: You are totally independent from wind direction. Its like on ice. You can ride in every direction you want. I was in Westerhever now with following wind directions:
SSW – SW – W – WNW and N. Each time I reached more than 44 knots topspeed because I always found a place on that flooded beach which was shallow enough.
If you see a seagull standing (!) in your way, its perfect.:)
If there are parts in your way which are entirely smooth like a bald head it might be TOO flat. But its not as dangerous as I thought. Its like you fully put on the brake on a highway. But if you are fast enough you dont fall. So the faster you are the more sure it is because of your enormous kinetic energy.
Nevertheless I always wear a stiff collar around my neck…better is that :)
On the second photo (with the two people in the background – click on it to enlarge the photo) you can see very well how extremely shallow = flat the water was sometimes. This beach really is a fantastic present of nature for speedkiters !
